What We Do

Bath Meadow Conservancy

where people and nature thrive together

Our Mission

The Bath Meadow Conservancy is operated by the Kennebec RiverView as a non-profit 501(c)(3) founded in October 2024. Created to save the only remaining in-town property along Bath’s beloved river.

In the densely-housed district at the corner of Front and North Streets, what was once a derelict coal pocket and construction site will be transformed into an ecological meadow open to the public:

  • the rare panoramic view will invite the public into accessible paths, comfortable seating, and a gathering circle;

  • native grasses and wildflowers will foster biodiversity and attract pollinators whose precipitous decline now threatens the collective food supply;

  • as an experiential amenity that complements existing downtown waterfront parks, its focus will be education on the ecology and history of the meadow and river.

  • it will serve as a model for the movement toward urban meadows as significant attractors of pollinators — a rich variety of birds and insects that provide 1/3 of our human food.

My husband Bill King often said, “We need to connect the community to the river.” I am hoping that we here now decide to “take care” of this open land and let it be our bridge to the river for generations to come.
